This body of work depicts the feeling of not being in control of how you orient yourself. I want to draw attention to how it is significantly harder for people with mental illnesses and disabilities to follow social rules. People do not need to be feared, judged, or reprimanded for acting differently, but in a society focused on control, it is hard for people to feel comfortable. My pieces primarily focus on what it looks like not to conform to social rules or on the anxiety of being perceived differently from others. My process is intuitive and therapeutic. I am an artist who creates expressive, figurative ceramic works and oil paintings with a dark yet colorful palette. Figurative ceramics appeal to me because of the intimate tactile experience of morphing another body with your hands. In this body of work, my hands manipulate the clay to mirror the internal anxiety that comes from a lifetime of masking as a survival mechanism. My artwork is full of themes and imagery relevant to my life and the evolution of my mental health. Many of my themes revolve around nature, often bugs or imagery that represents the cycle of life and death. Pieces in this body of work are entwined with the earth in a way that accepts the often-rejected, more animalistic side of our nature.
The following pieces are all carved from B-Mix clay and painted with a wash of black underglaze.
